I’ll start by saying I enjoyed the ending 🤷🏽‍♀️but every thing else bothered me. Val had no backbone when it came to Dante and it just ughhhh irritated the heck out of me!! He was such a jerk, so cold and unfeeling & I don’t even wanna discuss his chosen sexual position! I rolled my eyes for the better part of this book 🙄🙄🙄. I just didn’t like the characters, NONE of them. Poor BiBi😔 ughh just ughh ☹️

The last two chapters/epilogue did not make up for 20 characters of boring awfulness! My recommendation is that you skip this one (like I should’ve) and move on to Gianna’s story.

I enjoy mafia romances, but have not read a ton of them. This book started off well but quickly became unbelievable. The premise of the book is of a widowed young woman who's family is part of the mafia, gets engaged to the mafia boss without her input. The mafia boss still grieves his dead wife, and that puts their marriage off to a rocky start. The heroine in this story was extremely moody and contradicted herself often. It was very frustrating. For a shy, inexperienced woman, fearing rejection, she threw herself at her husband an unrealistic amount. She was sarcastic often and there is no way that a mafia boos would have tolerated his wife speaking to him the way that she did, and often at that! That is just naming a few of the many many things that did not line up with other books I had read involving the mafia. There were several aspects of the story that were completely unbelievable. I did not enjoy the first book in this series, that I read several months ago, so I am not sure why I decided to try this one. I know that all fiction books are obviously not based in real life, however I like them to be realistic to a certain extent. Very disappointed.
What a wonderful story of the ecstasy and agony of love. This is the story of Dante, the Boss of the Chicago Syndicate and Valentina, cousin of Aria in the first book. Val is a young widow; her husband supposedly died at the hands of the Russian mob, and so her family considers it a coup when she is married off to Dante, whose first wife died from cancer. Unfortunately, Dante never got over the death of his first wife and he is a cold, emotionally detached shell of a man.

Dante's emotional coldness makes Val's life miserable, although she tries really hard to be a good wife to Dante. She knows the ways of the Mafia life since her father is in the Syndicate too but she still is stubborn and independent and finds ways to assert herself, even with all the restrictions this lifestyle places on women.

There are lots of unexpected twists and turns in the plot so it's not only a good romance novel, but it has a lot of action and mysterious intrigue as well. The sex scenes are steamy, but one of the most tender and heartfelt scenes is towards the end of the book, when Val asks Dante to make love to her and to "pretend that you love me". OMG!! I felt like crying, it reminded me of the Adele song "All I Ask".

Amazingly, this couple finally gets to their HEA. I like that they got to it while the characters still remained true to who they were. Dante was never going to be an openly demonstrative man when it came to expressing his love for Val, but he loved her in his own way.

Great series thus far but I really am looking forward to reading about the tumultuous relationship between Matteo, Luca's brother and Gianna, Aria's sister from the first book in the series, I bet it's sizzling!!
Hmmm, where to start? Gosh this book has left me feeling rather conflicted. I'm sitting on the fence with this one. There were a few things that I loved about it, and there were more than a few things that I could not stand. Okay, let's start with what I did like

The sex scenes were steamy, however they were nowhere near as good as the first book. Because of the story and the interaction between the two main characters (or really, lack thereof--and don't worry, no spoilers here), the sex scenes were a welcome relief while at the same time they just felt sad. What kept me going was the author's writing style and a deep, deep hope that the book would redeem itself. It really didn't, but the author has a nice, relaxed writing style that moves you along easily and it keeps you going.

Okay, so things I didn't like so much about this book the characters. As in, all of them. Seriously, I think perhaps the only people in the book who even seemed remotely interesting were Val's bodyguard, the cook, and Gaby, and none of them really even talk...so that says something right there. As for Valentina, man what a pushover. She's a mob princess with no spine. She was a doormat, and she was way worse than Aria in the first book. There were times where it felt like perhaps she was going to stand up for herself, but then the author would completely renege on that development by having Valentina be like, "Oh I'm so over this! I'm done!...but I can never leave him," or, "I just want to be loved. I deserve to be loved!...but I'll take whatever sad scraps he decides to throw my way and I guess I'll be fine with that," (<--not actual quotes fyi, just a summary of how she felt/acted). If I were Valentina I would have been so done with his a**, and sadly that really never changed in the book. With the exception of the last few pages, he was just so cold, distant, and such a jerk for approximately 98% of the book. Trust me, I love a slow development of characters, especially a love interest, so I'm okay with characters starting out by being rude, violent, or even having a lackluster personality so long as they are developed into something more and we, as readers, get to experience that growth with them. That didn't really happen here. This book would have been so much better if how Dante felt at around 98% actually started to occur at around 60% of the book.

Another thing that frustrated me to no end was the fact that the entire book just basically circled around Valentina's desperate need to be loved by Dante. I get that love is important and we all want to feel cherished, but at a certain point a line gets drawn in the sand and after that it just becomes a bit sad. There really was no action (a few tiny blips on the plot here and there), there was no character development (I literally have no idea what Val or Dante like to do, where they like to go, what they want to do with their lives, their hobbies, etc), and considering that Dante is supposed to be the Don, he just seemed like a cold, distant person with a social disorder, not a ruthless and violent leader of the midwest Cosa Nostra. I just didn't buy it in book two.

Lastly, as with the first book, there were some editing mistakes that jilted the flow of the book slightly. Incorrect use of words, wrong spelling, etc, but nothing too bad. Gaby changed to Gabi and back again a few times, but again, nothing too bad. A fresh set of eyes during editing might have caught all that.

I'm feeling a little bummed about this book, but since I did enjoy the first book with Aria & Luca, and I'm really excited for the third book, I would still recommend this author to readers. Just take this book with a grain of salt knowing that there is very little action (especially considering that this is a mob book), and that the h is pretty weak, and the H is a, "cold fish," as they say in the book.

Looking forward to book three though! Gianna and Matteo are both such spitfires and I CAN'T WAIT!
