"The bones were tiny. They lay in his hand like a set of pearls, translucent and fragile. When he turned them to the light, he could see their fractured ends and hollow cores. They were light as a feather, as brittle as chalk. And as easy to break as a straw..."
CLAWS is a short novella from award-winning British crime writer Stephen Booth, featuring one of his main series characters, Detective Constable Ben Cooper, on assignment to the Derbyshire Rural Crime Squad and tackling the problems of wildlife crime.
In the wild crags of the Dark Peak moorland, a ruthless conflict has been raging for years. The discovery of an illegal haul from the bedroom of a terraced house is a clue to what might be at stake - perhaps the entire future of one of the most prized landscapes in the Peak District National Park.
For Ben Cooper, his assignment to the Rural Crime Squad means stepping into the middle of the conflict, without being quite sure whose side he's on. The predators come in all shapes and sizes. And in this battle, not all the victims will be human...
The Cooper & Fry series has won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, including two Barry Awards for Best British Crime Novel and the Dagger in the Library for "the author whose books have given readers most pleasure".
Stephen Booth has also been a Gold Dagger finalist, an Anthony nominee, and twice shortlisted for the Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year. DC Cooper reached the finals of the Sherlock Award for best detective created by a British author. There are 11 full-length novels in the series, the latest being THE DEVIL'S EDGE.
"Booth is a modern master of rural noir" - The Guardian
"One of the elite British mystery writers" - Washington Times
"There are few, if any, contemporary writers who do this as well as Stephen Booth" - Arena Magazine
"Booth delivers some of the best crime fiction in the UK" - Manchester Evening News
"One of our best story tellers" - Sunday Telegraph

Honestly, half the book seemed like a tree hugger's love fest but since I love the Cooper character I slogged ahead. In the end it was a good novella just not sparks flying like in the Cooper and Fry books. In time it must be set after book 2 of Cooper & Fry mysteries as he is living in town. It still had a blow away surprise or three but not the multiple red herrings of the mystery books. It was still worth the read but my rating would have been lower without having the background from the mystery novels. So my caveat is this. Get the book after a few of theCooper and Fry novels and by the end you will be nearer to my rating. Enough said....shuProduct details

Claws The Cooper Fry series edition by Stephen Booth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
like this series
This was an excellent novella by Stephen Booth featuring Ben Cooper. As always, the description of the countryside where this story takes place was wonderful.
This is the third book of the series that I have read and is the only one I can't recommend. A short story that fell short of capturing, much less sustaining, my interest.
I suspect this is the exception to the rule and look forward to reading another full length novel soon.
Great like the rest of the series!
There's not enough character development. It is more like a teaser, to get you to want to buy a full novel, perhaps. It was a worthy topic, about protecting raptors and eggs, etc.. It had an interesting slant to it, as Cooper considered whether something was worth doing anything about...I'm trying not to spoil anything for readers...
Generally, I enjoyed it, but it just sort of seemed lacking in undertones and personal interactions. I have most all Booth's other novels, and love them.
A pleasant enough read. Important to know that it is a very short story and not the full length article usual in the Cooper/Fry series.
Because of this it was a little disappointing as it did not have the complex plot developments and the fascinating interactions between Cooper and Fry. Nevertheless Murfin and other familiar characters are all here.
Recommended for those who have exhausted the rest of Stephen Booth's Cooper/Fry series but need another quick (very quick!) fix.
The rights of the land owners, the rights of the hunters and the rights of the protected species of Raptors, birds of Prey. Yes there is a time to take sides and protect what is right. Interestingly, Detective Constable Ben Cooper appears to make the decision to take the cash, accumulated by Kevin Hewett from his illegal activities, Blackmail, Drugs and protected wildlife theft and sales. Of course there's reasons within reasons and of course why?
This is well written short story, unfortunately it's the first of these I've read, so consequently I didn't have enough to pull all the character traits into a nice comfortable conclusion. So while a nice well written story it would be better read as part of his larger volume of works. Not a bad read simple not the great read I had hoped for.
