The Best Man The Blue Heron Series Kristan Higgins 9780373777921 Books

I've been a Kristen Higgins fan since I bought my first book because I liked the cover, and The Best Man doesn't disappoint. Maybe it's because the storyline is compelling, maybe I just like to visualize a hot guy who figured stuff out by the end, maybe it's the dog. All I know is, when I read a book by Higgans, I know the dialogue is going to be witty and hilarious, the visuals are going to transport me, and the story is going to give me feels. And I know it doesn't matter to everyone, but she gets the little details right, like how an EMT will approach an accident scene. I don't have to worry about suspension of disbelief, because she takes care of it in her writing and editing. I'm a bit of a grammar nerd, and I've got to tell you, I never have to do rewrites in my head when I read Higgins. Little things like that make every one of her books a five star. I've read The Best Man at least five times, and it never gets old. Enjoy the read.

The Best Man The Blue Heron Series Kristan Higgins 9780373777921 Books Reviews

I had read a book in this series out of order....in the reviews of that book, I noticed how often people spoke fondly of the initial books in this series. I thought maybe I should just start at the beginning.

This book is filled with warmth, wise cracking charm and irresistible characters. I could not put this book down. I carried it around with me on my phone until I was finished. It is a very fast read and completely engaging. I like the adult characters, their foibles and lifelong interactions as well as the themes of forgiveness and maturation. Faith is a really flawed but layered protagonist and fun to read. The location writing is really amazingly good; you can't help but see this place in your mind's eye.

I found the content regarding seizure disorders and ice wine to be well researched and added to the depth of the backstory. I enjoy genre work that centers on adult characters. Was totally entertained by this book and will move on to more in the series.
I started reading this book on the beach and finished it in about 24 hours. It has a Gilmore Girls feel to it - a small town culture, issues of class, familial eccentricity and conflict. I love traveling to the Finger Lakes, and it was interesting to learn about the vineyards and wineries. The romance was just a part of the story since you get to know the whole town and the issues that they deal with. I enjoyed that sense of complexity and the love story had some good twists to it - the actually relationship really doesn't begin to build until about halfway into the story (and even then I did feel like Levi kind of sexualized Faith more than actually appreciating her for who she is - but maybe that is to be expected in this kind of book?) "The Best Man" has a humorous and modern tone that I appreciated. References to 50 Shades cracked me up, and there were some great lines throughout. The sweater down the toilet and the scene following was hysterical (if somewhat over the top). The backstories for both Faith and Levi were touching and heartfelt.

Overall, I enjoyed the book as a somewhat guilty pleasure. The writing, character development, and plot(s) were all well done. A couple of minor things irritated me though.
1) while the writer exhibited a "modern and progressive" acceptance of the gay ex, I was disappointed in the disparaging treatment of the transgendered character (likely not a transvestite as indicated in the novel). Granted the comments and response were not totally without tolerance, but a little research would have allowed for greater sensitivity in that scene.

2) using the phrase "hemorrhoid" as a curse is just distracting and ick. "He's such a hemorrhoid." "Oh, hemorrhoid . . . " IDK just bugged me.
Faith returns home to contribute to her family's vineyard but only plans to stay for a few weeks. Well, there is no place like home and once there, she can't really remember why she should stay away. It is hard being back in to the town where everyone witnessed your downfall - being left at the alter by her high school sweetheart - Jeremy.

The painintheass Levi is EVERYWHERE Faith looks. He is also a painful reminder of everything (Jeremy) she lost. Levi is the reason she is not happily married. He ruined her wedding (at least in her mind). Levi wants NOTHING to do with Princess. She is so innocent and blind, she could not see what was right in front of her.
Lucy Lang is in her twenties, she has been a widow for five years. After her sister gives birth to baby Emma, Lucy decides it is time to move on and start dating again. So maybe it is time to stop sleeping with her dead husband's brother, Ethan Mirabelli.

Lucy wants to find a man whom she can love just a little. She is terrified of falling head over heals and wants to settle for someone she can have a kid with but is not crazy for.

The females in her family seem to lose their husbands at an early age. Her mother and sisters are known as the Black Widows. They own a bakery where Lucy works but they refuse to let Lucy improve the menu. Despite her being a pastry chef and have a passion for baking.

As always the secondary characters are wonderful. The family gatherings, the small town, the humor is what will make me want to buy any of her books. Surprisingly, this is my first book by Kristan who has a cat instead of a dog as the memorable pet.
First book by this author and I am hooked. I can't wait to read the rest and more from her. The characters are interesting, the love story well written, and some great humor written in. I also am a fan of the setting, as I have always enjoyed visiting the Finger Lakes region of New York.

I really like as well how the author incorporates some of the past stories. You really feel that you understand what motivates and creates the characters actions. I also really liked how the journey felt more natural. It wasn't like at the end they just moved on from their pasts and just got over everything all at once. I am not a fan when books or movies for that matter do that. People just don't snap their fingers and its all ok. This was a progression you could see with the characters.

I LOVED this book. My only complaint was I read it too fast and was sad when it was over. Luckily its a series and I found a new author to follow.
